We discovered our connection with this tonality and suddenly we realised that there are certain pieces we feel very much connected to and they all are in c minor: Grieg’s Third Violin Sonata, Beethoven’s Seventh Violin Sonata and Brahms’ Scherzo. This tonal key carries a particular kind of dramatism, reflected in different ways by these composers, that provokes and touches us deeply. Especially when it comes to Beethoven. A lot can be said about Beethoven and his connection to c minor. In his book Charles Rosen writes: “Beethoven in C minor has come to symbolise his artistic character. In every case, it reveals Beethoven as a Hero. C minor does not show Beethoven at his most subtle, but it does give him to us in his most extrovert form, where he seems to be most impatient of any compromise.”
